FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FREEDOM OF THE PRESS RECEPTION

A Evening to Honor War Correspondents

(Arlington, VA) The Academy of United States Veterans and the producers of the feature documentary MOSUL will host Embed, A Celebration of the First Amendment, on Friday, April 26, 2019 at The Old Post Office Building in Washington, DC. The exclusive reception will host influential and celebrated leaders from across the communities of journalism, entertainment, and public service. Embed will honor the bravery of war correspondents and freedom of the press, one of the many values that has made our country the envy of the world.

MOSUL is a character-driven, feature-length documentary (88 minutes). The film’s footage showcases the progression of the battle to liberate the Iraqi city of Mosul from the Islamic State (ISIS), through the journey of multiple characters from contrasting backgrounds and ideologies who all have a significant role in the fight.

Despite declarations of victory over ISIS by the Iraqi and U.S. governments, MOSUL is a timely reminder of an unimaginable reality: Even though their dreams of a Caliphate lie in tatters, ISIS’ destructive ideology and brutal campaign of murder still poses an existential threat to Iraq and the region. Many of the characters featured in MOSUL remain very much in the fight against ISIS, as they now struggle to rebuild their homes and families.

Mosul

"Mosul" was filmed between October 2016 and August 2017 by Journalist Ali Maula and his team of Iraqi filmmakers. Beginning in the fall of 2016 during operations in Nineveh Province and East Mosul, Ali and his team cross the Tigris River into West Mosul, where fanatical ISIS fighters are holed up in homes, hospitals, schools, and mosques, using civilians as human shields as they make their desperate last stand. Granted unprecedented access to refugee camps, ISIS detainees, and active combat zones, Maula and his crew voyage into the heart of darkness - and return with riveting stories seen here for the first time.
